It is hard to not overstimulate your baby, I love playing with my son and I sometimes play with him before he goes to sleep making him laugh and want to play some more. My husband gets so angry when I do this.
However the repercussions are hard, as my son would get too hyperactive and unable to sleep. I would have to spend even more time getting him to sleep. So what I did when he was overstimulated would be to read to him and sing lullabies. I would also spend a little more time in the bedroom with him until he was relaxed and settled.
I think its important to have a daily routine with you baby. One which involves 30 mins quiet time before bedtime. You can have a bath, give him his milk and then read to him before turning the lights off.
