Lidia Jast About Pregnancy And Motherhod

Would you like to tell us about your pregnancy experience and the birth?

My pregnancy was good, however I had nausea during the entire pregnancy, which was a little bit painful. Giving birth was a very long process, my water broke and I had to go to the hospital but I had to return home as my contractions had not started. However the following day the contractions started and over 24 hours later I gave birth to a boy, Wilhelm. I chose to use epidural.

How did you find coping with a new baby in the first three weeks, three months, six months?

My first three weeks were a challenge as I had to adjust to my new life, at the same time try to recover myself whilst taking care of my new baby. After that most of the time was breastfeeding and changing diapers. The first three month my baby would poop 14 times a day so a lot of diaper changing. But I was also taking the opportunity to spend time with other mothers and enjoying my new life. .

What do you find to be the most difficult aspect of motherhood?

The most difficult aspect has to be free time. I feel it is difficult to do anything other than taking care of my child. Also to get a whole night sleep without interruptions.

What do you find to be the easiest?

To be in an environment with other people and children. Feeding is also easy, at least now after the first year.

What would be your main tip to first-time mothers?

To not worry too much about everything. I feel that I did that too much during the first 6 months.

What was the best piece of equipment you bought/found most useful?

Breastpump and a babychair that enabled our son to sit with us at the table even when he was below 6 month.

What do you find is the hardest situation with a young baby?

To avoid using my phone.

What did you find was the hardest and most difficult aspect of being an expectant mother, when it came to researching and obtaining information prior to the birth e.g. necessities, products, equipment?

Information was easy to find, but there were perhaps too many websites available with information which made if time consuming.

What do you do with your young baby to keep her/him entertained as the weeks go by?

I give him a running commentary on everything I’m doing - I’m not sure how interesting he finds it, but he is starting to try to speak back to met.

What did you find was the hardest and most difficult aspect of being an expectant mother, when it came to researching and obtaining information prior to the birth e.g. necessities, products, equipment?

There is such an enormous baby market now that there is almost too much choice and it’s really difficult to differentiate between the different products. I think I spent three weeks alone researching which cot to buy.

I try to play with him and to take him to environments where there are other children and the park.

What would you do again and what would you not do?

I would use the routines I used, when it comes to sleeping and feeding of my baby. However I would not worry too much and avoid to pump too much breast-milk.

Would you have another child?

Yes absolutely, the experience is so beautiful and I would want a sibling for my son.

What word of advice would you give to any expectant mother?

To not worry to much and try to have a close relationship with the nurse. Also I really recommend sleeping and feeding routines.
